A long time ago, humans sit in the flickering glow of a fire that was built to cook the hunt of the day, nourishing their ancient bodies, settling in for the nightly ritual of storytelling. The fire, now tasked with warmth and illumination, crackles and dances as the spirits descend - ready to perform for the full-bellied creatures below.
A peaceful lull will follow, but right now, these early souls wish to see something divine, inspired, undeniable. They wait for an invitation to be accepted, a temporary possession that will render an ordinary human extraordinary for a moment. Maybe a song is waiting for a voice that will sing it right, perhaps a dance is waiting for a body that is able. That is art. A communion with something Other, I call it a muse, for the purpose of expressing emotion. It is a sacred act, and it is still happening today.
Song and dance, voice and bone - this is our origin.
My desire is to bring authentic art into the world - not for the purpose of fame and fortune, but to fulfill the life purpose I have been given - to do my part in allowing art to flow through me to you.
It takes time. It takes effort. It takes vulnerability, it takes a lot of self reflection (and a little bit of therapy from time to time) but most importantly it takes dedication to cultivating a good relationship with the muse and her ideas. I have learned over the years that if you don’t move quick, the idea will go seek another willing participant.
I try to stay open, stay willing. I do that best by spending time with my animals (ponies), looking for inspiration in nature and history, and finding joy in little things every day (pizza) while keeping an ear to the wind, hoping to hear the whisper of a new idea from the Other world beyond.
So…
When you support me through my Pizza & Ponies Fund, you are allowing me to continue making and self-publishing this art. A record deal sounds cool but I want to do this the good ol’ fashioned way. Through blood, sweat, tears, and a little bit of help from a Youngster like yourself.
